The annual farm tour for the county’s third graders took place Tuesday at Mountain View Farms in Avalon and the Stephens County third graders spent a day at the farm. Farm owner Linda Dean said they could not have asked for a better day and had a great time. “We have some new things this year,” said Dean. “We have bees that we have not had before. We are having a great time showing kids agriculture.” The students had a chance to learn about all different kinds of farm animals, as well as gardening, watersheds, and more. Dean said it is important for young people to learn about agriculture and how it works. “I want them to see that they need agriculture to survive,” said Dean. “Everybody has to eat. Everybody has to have clothes to wear. It is hard work. There is no doubt about that, but there are people who are dedicated to doing it and I just want them to enjoy the day and see it can be fun to be out in the country and enjoy things.” Mountain View Farms has hosted the event for the past few years. Dean said seeing the students learn brings a smile to her face. “It is a new world for a lot of them,” said Dean. “A lot of them have never been on a farm before and so they do not know anything about it. It is wonderful to see that they are learning something new.” Besides agriculture, Hart EMC was also on hand again this year to talk about electricity and safety around electricity.
