According to statistics released Thursday by the Georgia Department of Labor, Stephens County’s preliminary unemployment rate for February was 9.6 percent. That marks a three-tenths of a percent decline from January’s revised rate of 9.9 percent. This February’s unemployment rate is also nine-tenths of a percent lower than the revised rate for February 2011 of 10.5 percent. Stephens County’s unemployment rate shows an increase in the first month of 2012. According to the Georgia Department of Labor, Stephens County’s preliminary unemployment rate increased to 9.9 percent in January. That marks a four-tenth of a percentage point increase form December’s revised rate of 9.5 percent. However, the January unemployment rate this year is 1.4 percent lower than the revised rate of 11.3 percent in January 2011.
The Stephens County School system is inviting the public to the dedication and open house for the new Stephens County High School on Sunday. Doors open a 3:00 p.m. with self-guided tours and entertainment until 4:15 p.m. in the Tugaloo Center for the Performing Arts. Refreshments will also be served during the Open House.
GEM Plastics hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony at their facility located at 53 Clary Connector in Eastanollee on March, 15. The ceremony officially opened the expansion of the GEM Plastics company, a division of GEM Southeast Corporation. Osborne Wood announced their expansion at their facility on Hwy 123 with a groundbreaking ceremony that took place on March the 8th. Osborne Wood Products has operated in Toccoa over 30 years. In 1979, they began their operations as a cabinet sub-contractor. While in the sub-contract furniture industry Osborne Wood Products realized the need to develop their own product line. After identifying a need for furniture parts in small quantities, Osborne started manufacturing table legs and pedestals, while still providing furniture for many local companies. The Stephens County Development Authority wishes Osborne Wood Products continued success and many thanks for being an important part of our community!
U.S. Rep. Paul Broun will host a town hall meeting today in Stephens County. All residents of Georgia’s 10th Congressional District, which Broun represents, are encouraged to attend and share their questions and concerns with Broun. Broun plans to answer questions and provide updates on key issues and is accompanied by members of his staff who will also be available to help constituents who are experiencing difficulties with federal agencies such as the Internal Revenue Service or the Social Security Administration. The meeting will be held at the conference center at the North Georgia Technical College Currahee Campus in Toccoa at 1:00 p.m. today, March 14, 2012.
